Once there was a cat who had absolutely no intention of doing anything useful. She found a ball of yarn on a sunny windowsill, batted it off the ledge, and spent the rest of the morning following it wherever it rolled — under the chair, behind the bookshelf, into a patch of afternoon light she hadn't noticed before.
Two small birds watched from the sill. They had nests to build, berries to find, important bird errands. But the longer they watched, the more the yarn looked like exactly the right material. So they swooped down, grabbed a loose end, and started weaving — not because they had a plan, but because something about it felt like exactly the right thing to do.
By evening, there was a nest. The cat was asleep inside it.
